Gastric dilatation-volvulus, or bloat, is a life-threatening emergency in large and giant breed dogs. Rapid recognition and immediate veterinary intervention are essential — delay of even a few hours is often fatal.
GDV is one of the most acutely painful and rapidly fatal conditions dogs experience. The distension causes extreme pain and the cardiovascular compromise causes distress and collapse. Every minute without treatment increases mortality risk and tissue damage. Owners of high-risk breeds must recognise early signs and seek emergency veterinary care immediately — this is not a condition to monitor at home or wait until morning. Prophylactic gastropexy during routine surgery such as neutering is increasingly recommended for high-risk breeds as a preventive welfare intervention.
