Tilapia and carp in overcrowded systems experience chronic physiological stress that manifests in suppressed immunity, increased susceptibility to parasites and bacteria, and the discomfort of poor water quality. Fin damage from aggression is common in overcrowded tilapia. Oxygen depletion events cause acute panic and distress before mortality. Welfare standards for these species lag significantly behind those for salmon, despite their much larger production volumes. Improving water quality management and reducing stocking densities represents the highest-impact near-term welfare intervention for these species.
