Tick-Borne Diseases in Cattle: Welfare and Prevention

Tick-borne diseases including babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and theileriosis cause significant welfare harm and economic losses in cattle worldwide. Integrated tick management and vaccination reduce disease burden substantially.

Welfare Considerations

Cattle with acute babesiosis or theileriosis suffer from high fever, severe anaemia, respiratory distress, and rapid deterioration without treatment. East Coast Fever in particular causes weeks of progressive lymph node swelling and organ failure. The welfare burden in endemic regions is enormous — cattle that survive acute disease may remain chronically anaemic and immunosuppressed. Effective tick control through strategic acaricide use, vaccination where available, and pasture management reduces both disease incidence and the suffering of individual affected animals.
