Vulture poisoning causes acute and prolonged suffering — affected birds experience convulsions, paralysis, and distress over hours before death. Mass poisoning events, where hundreds of birds die simultaneously at a single poisoned carcass, represent welfare disasters of extraordinary scale. Beyond individual suffering, vulture population collapse removes a critical ecological service: rapid carcass removal that prevents the spread of anthrax, botulism, and rabies.
