Standard intensive broiler systems deprive birds of natural behaviours including foraging, perching, dust bathing, and responding to natural light cycles — all of which are strongly motivated and likely important for psychological wellbeing. Enrichment trials consistently show increased activity, reduced fear responses, and better leg health in enriched versus unenriched flocks. Even simple additions like straw bales provide pecking, scratching, and elevated resting opportunities. The challenge is scaling these practices in an industry where margins are extremely tight — consumer willingness to pay small premiums for higher-welfare chicken is the primary driver of change.
