Snow petrels, among the most southerly-breeding birds on Earth, face emerging welfare and conservation challenges from climate-driven changes to sea ice and their nesting habitat in Antarctica.
Snow petrel welfare is threatened by the same climate processes affecting other ice-dependent species, but their extreme specialisation makes them particularly vulnerable. Declining sea ice reduces access to preferred prey, forcing birds to travel greater distances and return to chicks with less food — causing chick starvation and adult energy deficit. Extended foraging trips mean chicks are unprotected from temperature extremes and skua predation for longer periods. Research handling of snow petrels, while necessary for monitoring, causes stress including the deployment of the species' characteristic defence mechanism — projectile vomiting of stomach oil — indicating acute fear. Minimising handling time and using non-invasive monitoring methods where possible reduces research-related welfare impacts.
