Feather pecking is one of the most significant welfare problems in laying hen production, causing pain, injury, and mortality. Understanding its causes enables targeted prevention strategies that reduce suffering across millions of birds.
Feather pecking is a welfare emergency that begins with minor feather damage and can rapidly escalate to open wounds, haemorrhage, and cannibalism of living birds. The experience of being repetitively pecked — with associated skin damage and social disruption — represents significant ongoing suffering. Historically the industry response focused on beak trimming, which trades one source of pain (pecking) for another (beak nerve damage and phantom pain). The evidence base for preventing feather pecking through environmental management — foraging substrate, appropriate stocking density, nutritional completeness, and lighting — is strong and should supplant beak trimming as the primary strategy. Monitoring flock welfare daily and intervening at first signs of feather damage is the most effective way to prevent minor pecking from escalating.
