Red-ruffed lemur welfare in captivity is substantially determined by social group quality and dietary diversity. As highly social frugivores, they require conspecific companions for grooming, social play, and alloparenting — behaviours that occupy significant time in wild populations. Dietary monotony in zoo settings leads to reduced motivation and foraging behaviour, which should be addressed through varied fruit provision, browse, and puzzle feeders. Seasonal reproductive management — using photoperiod manipulation — reduces the stress of off-season breeding attempts. The conservation value of captive populations is high: red-ruffed lemurs are too endangered for genuine wild population recovery without habitat protection, and ex-situ populations provide genetic insurance against extinction. Welfare quality in zoo populations directly influences the reproductive success of the breeding programme and thus the conservation outcome.
