The welfare scale of the chytrid crisis is almost incomprehensible — hundreds of millions of individual amphibians die from chytridiomycosis, experiencing the distressing symptoms of electrolyte collapse, lethargy, and skin disintegration before death. Whether amphibians experience suffering in a morally significant way is debated, but their neurological capacity for nociception and stress responses suggests chytridiomycosis involves genuine welfare harm. Captive amphibians in rescue populations require careful biosecurity, antifungal treatment protocols, and enriched housing.
