Heat stress is one of the most significant welfare and productivity challenges facing cattle globally, and its impact is intensifying with climate change. Understanding and mitigating heat stress is essential for cattle welfare.
Heat stress in cattle causes significant acute and chronic suffering. The physiological stress response involves elevated cortisol, increased respiratory effort, and thermally-driven discomfort analogous to fever. Cattle experiencing severe heat stress display panting, excessive salivation, crowding near water sources, shade-seeking behaviour, and social disruption. Chronic low-grade heat stress impairs immune function, increasing susceptibility to mastitis, lameness, and metabolic diseases — causing extended welfare compromise beyond acute discomfort episodes. The welfare-productivity connection is strong: heat-stressed dairy cows suffer both reduced wellbeing and reduced milk production simultaneously, creating an economic incentive for producers to invest in heat abatement — though this incentive is often insufficient to drive adequate investment in welfare terms.
