The Five Freedoms framework, developed partly through research on sheep welfare, continues to provide the foundation for animal welfare assessment globally.
The Five Freedoms framework provides a useful minimum standard for welfare assessment but has limitations in that it focuses primarily on preventing negative experiences. Modern welfare frameworks including the Five Domains model expand this to include provision of positive experiences. Applying these frameworks to sheep welfare assessment helps identify gaps between current practice and good welfare.
