Atlantic bluefin tuna are arguably the fish for which sea cage confinement represents the greatest welfare departure from natural conditions. These are open-ocean apex predators that experience their environment through speed, distance, and depth — migration is not merely a behaviour they perform but an expression of their fundamental biology. Confinement in a sea cage, however large, deprives them of their characteristic response to threats (high-speed escape), their natural foraging behaviour, and the environmental complexity of open water. The trauma of capture from the wild — involving aircraft spotting schools, purse-seining, and transfer to cages — is intense. Fish welfare science has established that fishes possess the neurological architecture to experience stress and likely pain; for tuna, the acute stress of capture followed by chronic confinement represents a sustained welfare cost. True tuna aquaculture from the egg — which some research programmes are developing — would eliminate the wild capture burden, though confinement welfare concerns would remain. Until then, wild-source tuna ranching essentially transfers wild fish suffering into extended confinement before slaughter.
