Giraffes are one of the most iconic zoo animals, yet their welfare in captivity is compromised by inadequate social groupings, insufficient space for natural movement, and the chronic health effects of inappropriate flooring. Understanding their needs is essential for welfare-conscious zoo management.
Giraffe welfare in captivity is shaped by the fundamental mismatch between their extraordinary physiology — evolved for open savannah environments, browsing from tall trees, and ranging widely in fluid social groups — and the constraints of even large, well-funded zoo enclosures. The lameness problem, while solvable through appropriate substrate choice, is widespread enough to indicate that flooring welfare has not been adequately prioritised across the industry. Nutritional management that relies on concentrated, palatable feeds presented at ground level distorts both the feeding behaviour and gastrointestinal function of animals adapted for high-browse, slow ingestion over many hours. Socially, the reduction of a fission-fusion society capable of ranging across hundreds of kilometres to a stable group of 3-5 animals in a fixed enclosure removes the social complexity and individual choice that characterise natural giraffe social life. Well-designed giraffe facilities that address substrate, browse presentation, social grouping, and enclosure complexity can achieve substantially better welfare — but this standard requires significant investment and commitment that not all institutions provide.
