A calf disbudded without local anaesthesia and NSAID analgesia experiences acute pain during the procedure and at least 24-72 hours of post-procedural pain during which normal feeding and behaviour are disrupted. The failure to routinely use available, inexpensive analgesics (lidocaine costs pennies per calf; NSAIDs add modest cost) when their welfare benefit is scientifically established represents an ethical gap that should be closed through regulation, farmer training, and veterinary advocacy. The existence of polled genetics — which eliminate the need for the procedure entirely — provides a clear long-term pathway that breeding organisations and AI semen providers are increasingly supporting. The transition to polled cattle is the ultimate welfare solution, with multimodal pain management as the non-negotiable interim standard.
