Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most costly and welfare-significant disease in the global cattle industry, causing significant suffering in millions of animals annually. Prevention through management and vaccination is far more effective than treatment.
BRD causes substantial suffering in affected cattle. Pneumonia with its associated fever, breathing difficulty, and systemic illness is a genuinely painful condition that, in untreated or inadequately treated animals, can persist for days to weeks before resolution or death. Animals that recover from severe BRD episodes may have chronic lung damage that causes persistent reduced exercise tolerance and respiratory compromise — a welfare burden that extends beyond the acute illness episode. The management context of BRD — commingled feedlot cattle from multiple sources experiencing transport stress — creates conditions in which simultaneous outbreaks affecting large numbers of animals are the norm rather than the exception. Early, accurate disease detection through regular pen riding and individual animal monitoring is a welfare-critical management practice that is not universally applied. The welfare investment in prevention (pre-conditioning programmes, vaccination before transport, reduced commingling) is more effective than treatment and prevents suffering rather than ameliorating it once established.
