This is not quick death but a drawn-out welfare emergency experienced by millions of individual animals across thousands of cave hibernacula. Wind turbine barotrauma causes acute internal haemorrhage — the pressure wave as a bat passes near a blade tip causes lung and other internal organ damage without requiring direct contact. These are real, individual welfare harms that occur at enormous scale in species that are poorly understood by most members of the public. Bats also face the welfare challenge of roost disturbance during their most vulnerable period: maternity colony disturbance causes nursing females to abandon pups who then die of starvation and cold. Protection of roost sites and sensitisation of building renovation contractors to legal and welfare obligations is a concrete intervention that local bat groups provide across many countries.
