Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) causes pain and paralysis in thousands of dogs annually. Understanding surgical success rates, the importance of post-operative rehabilitation, and realistic prognosis helps owners make informed welfare decisions.
IVDD causes acute spinal cord compression that, at its most severe, leaves dogs completely paralysed and unable to feel their hindlimbs. The welfare profile differs by grade: Grade I-II dogs experience significant pain and locomotor difficulty; Grade IV-V dogs may have little pain perception in paralysed areas but experience the distress of sudden loss of function, loss of bladder and bowel control, and the physiological consequences of spinal cord injury. The welfare urgency of Grade V IVDD is acute — the 24-hour window within which surgery must occur to optimise recovery chances is a genuine welfare emergency. Delays from owner hesitation, referral wait times, or financial considerations directly reduce the probability that a dog will regain function, potentially condemning them to permanent paralysis that could have been avoided. The post-operative rehabilitation period is demanding for both dog and owner — bladder expression, physical therapy, and very gradual return to activity require commitment and expertise. For dogs that do not recover full function, high-quality wheelchairs and compassionate management can maintain good quality of life.
