Vulture welfare involves understanding the specific causes of individual suffering within the population-level crisis. Diclofenac poisoning causes an acutely painful death from visceral gout — uric acid crystal deposition in organs causes inflammation and organ failure over several days. Lead poisoning causes neurological deterioration, weakness, and eventual inability to fly or feed — a prolonged debilitating process. Deliberate carcass poisoning with agricultural chemicals (carbofuran, aldicarb) causes rapid convulsive death for vultures arriving at poisoned carcasses — events that can kill dozens to hundreds of individuals simultaneously. The ecological consequence of vulture collapse — increased disease spread from unprocessed carcasses — creates welfare harms that extend to livestock, wildlife, and human communities.
