Freshwater mussels are among the most endangered groups of animals on Earth, yet they receive minimal public attention. Their ecological role as water filterers and their welfare as animals with sensory capabilities deserves greater recognition.
Freshwater mussel welfare occupies an interesting ethical space: these animals have sensory systems and show behavioural responses to stimuli, but whether they have subjective experiences in a morally relevant sense is genuinely uncertain given their very different neural architecture from vertebrates. Their ecological importance is, however, undeniable and provides a strong independent basis for their conservation regardless of welfare status. The extinction of freshwater mussel species represents irreversible loss of biodiversity shaped over millions of years, with cascading effects on water quality, nutrient cycling, and the broader freshwater ecosystem that supports many species whose welfare status is less ambiguous. Protecting freshwater mussels through water quality improvement, host fish recovery, and habitat restoration benefits the entire freshwater ecosystem — a welfare investment that pays dividends across many species. The agricultural runoff, sewage inputs, and land use changes that have driven mussel decline are the same changes that degrade freshwater habitat for fish, amphibians, and countless invertebrates.
