Feline megacolon is a debilitating condition involving severe colonic dilation and dysfunction, causing chronic constipation and requiring intensive management or surgery.
Cats with megacolon experience chronic painful straining, abdominal discomfort, and the psychological distress of a blocked elimination need. Obstipation causes extreme discomfort as the colon distends with hardened feces. Hospitalization for manual evacuation under anesthesia may be required multiple times before surgery becomes necessary. The repeated cycle of constipation, straining, and medical intervention causes significant cumulative suffering. Owners unfamiliar with the condition may misinterpret straining for urination — a potentially dangerous mistake given the different urgency profiles. Surgery, when performed appropriately, dramatically improves welfare. Cats that do not receive adequate treatment — often due to cost barriers — face progressively worsening suffering.
