Protein-losing nephropathy (PLN) is a progressive kidney disease causing loss of protein through damaged glomeruli, leading to severe complications and significantly reduced quality of life in affected dogs.
Dogs with PLN experience progressive, multi-system illness. Severe hypoalbuminemia causes fluid to accumulate in the abdomen and limbs — affected dogs become visibly swollen, uncomfortable, and breathless as fluid compresses organs. Thromboembolic events — blood clots blocking pulmonary vessels — cause acute respiratory distress and sudden deterioration. Hypertension damages additional organs silently. The multiple daily medications required are burdensome for both dogs and owners. The progression of PLN despite treatment means many owners face the emotionally difficult experience of watching a dog deteriorate over months. Genetic testing programs for predisposed breeds can reduce the number of future dogs affected by identifying carrier animals before breeding.
