Catfish in intensive ponds are subject to chronic low-grade stress from crowding and variable water quality. Their stress tolerance has been misinterpreted as insensitivity — the same physiological adaptability that allows survival in poor conditions means catfish continue living in conditions that cause chronic discomfort without dying quickly. Slaughter by asphyxiation subjects catfish to prolonged conscious distress before death. Algal bloom crashes cause mass oxygen depletion events where tens of thousands of fish suffocate simultaneously. The scale of catfish production means welfare improvements would benefit a very large number of sentient animals. The developing welfare science for catfish is gradually informing industry practice, but regulatory requirements for humane slaughter remain absent in most producing countries.
