Wild bottlenose dolphins face a complex array of human-caused welfare threats. Swim-with-dolphins tourism, despite its popularity, causes measurable welfare harm: dolphins approached by swimmers alter their behaviour, spending less time resting and nursing. In heavily visited areas like Monkey Mia (Australia) and various Caribbean locations, provisioning (hand-feeding) wild dolphins creates nutritional dependency and disrupts natural foraging skills transmitted to calves. Noise pollution from motorboats in shallow coastal habitats interferes with echolocation-based hunting and social communication, causing animals to abandon preferred foraging areas. Entanglement in fishing gear causes drowning deaths that are invisible to most consumers. Captive dolphinaria — separate from wild populations but often sourced from wild captures in Japan and the Solomon Islands — involve drive hunt captures causing acute trauma and high mortality during transport. Chemical contamination compromises immune function, with organochlorine transfer from mother to calf during nursing representing a particularly harmful pathway.
