Copper-associated hepatopathy is a serious liver condition in dogs where copper accumulates to toxic levels, causing progressive liver damage and requiring careful dietary and medical management.
Copper-associated hepatopathy causes progressive suffering that is often invisible until liver disease is advanced. The liver has remarkable regenerative capacity and substantial reserve, meaning dogs can lose over 70% of function before showing clinical signs — by which point significant suffering from uraemia, nausea and neurological effects of liver failure may be occurring. Early liver damage from copper accumulation is painful at the cellular level, causing oxidative stress-driven hepatocellular death, but does not cause the dramatic clinical signs that prompt veterinary visits. Once hepatic encephalopathy develops — the neurological manifestation of liver failure — dogs experience profound behavioural changes, seizures and severe disorientation. The preventable nature of much copper accumulation through dietary management makes this condition particularly significant from a welfare perspective: appropriate diet throughout life can substantially reduce or prevent copper-related liver damage in predisposed breeds.
