Stingrays are ecologically important elasmobranch fish whose welfare in the wild is increasingly threatened by targeted fishing, bycatch and habitat loss, with complex questions around their pain experience.
Stingray welfare exists in a scientific grey zone similar to other elasmobranch fish. Their neurological complexity is intermediate between teleost fish (where sentience evidence is growing) and mammals (where it is well-established). They demonstrate learning, avoidance behaviour, and responses to noxious stimuli consistent with nociception, but whether this constitutes subjective pain experience remains uncertain. Bycatch in longline fisheries — where stingrays are hauled aboard, have their tails cut off for the barb, and are discarded — causes clear physiological stress and likely pain if pain is possible in this group. Targeted fishing for their gill plates (used in traditional Chinese medicine) has severely depleted some populations. Habitat loss from coastal development eliminates the shallow sandy areas where stingrays forage and rest. Stingray tourism feeding — while creating popular visitor experiences — can condition animals to approach humans aggressively for food, increasing barb-related injuries to tourists.
