California sea lions are intelligent, highly social pinnipeds whose welfare is increasingly threatened by domoic acid poisoning, entanglement, gunshot wounds and conflict with fisheries.
California sea lions face a combination of natural and human-caused welfare threats. Domoic acid poisoning — caused by toxic algae blooms that are increasing in frequency and intensity due to ocean warming — causes seizures in sea lions that can last hours, causing exhaustion, brain damage and death. Stranded sea lions suffering domoic acid toxicity are frequently found on beaches in states of acute neurological distress. Gunshot wounds, often inflicted illegally by commercial and recreational fishers who blame sea lions for depleting fish stocks, cause severe pain and often prolonged deaths; necropsied sea lions regularly reveal embedded bullets and healed gunshot wounds indicating prior attacks. Entanglement causes drowning, lacerations and chronic constriction injuries. Human feeding — an apparently benign interaction — conditions sea lions to approach boats and docks where they are at risk of propeller strikes and aggressive human responses. Despite all these threats, the wild population is relatively robust, demonstrating the recovery possible under legal protection.
