Reintroduced lynx face multiple welfare challenges. Individuals bred in captivity may lack hunting skills, leading to starvation attempts and malnutrition. Vehicle collisions are a leading cause of mortality for newly released animals unfamiliar with road networks. Trapping and translocation involve significant acute stress. Radiotelemetry collars, while essential for monitoring, can cause discomfort and must be fitted carefully. Animals that develop problem behaviours toward livestock may be removed or killed, creating an ethical tension between individual welfare and population management. The welfare of individual animals in reintroduction programmes must be explicitly considered alongside population-level conservation goals.
