Honey badgers raiding beehives and poultry in rural Africa face lethal persecution that threatens local populations of this important but little-studied species.
Honey badgers caught in leg-hold traps experience prolonged suffering from trap injuries and stress before being killed. Poisoning causes slow, painful deaths. Beehive designs including the Beehive Fence developed for elephants have also been adapted for honey badger protection. Developing non-lethal beehive protection reduces honey badger persecution and its associated welfare costs.
