Heat stress is a major and growing welfare problem in cattle production globally. As temperatures rise with climate change, the welfare impact on feedlot and dairy cattle — who are physiologically limited in their ability to thermoregulate — is increasing in both frequency and severity.
Heat stress causes real and significant suffering: affected cattle become lethargic, increase panting and standing in water, reduce feed intake, and in severe cases die from hyperthermia. The physiological cascade — elevated core temperature, dehydration, respiratory alkalosis, reduced blood flow to the gut — represents acute discomfort and can cause organ damage. Feedlot cattle in dark-coated breeds or high-density conditions are particularly vulnerable. The convergence of climate change and intensive livestock production means this welfare problem is worsening. The economic losses from heat stress create genuine producer incentives to act, which means welfare and production interests align — a relatively rare situation in livestock welfare that advocates can leverage effectively.
