Beyond individual bee welfare, managed honey bee colonies experience collective stress from intensive commercial practices that compromise colony health, immunity, and survival.
Colony-level welfare encompasses the health and functioning of the superorganism as a whole. A colony under chronic stress — from Varroa, pesticides, nutritional deficiency, or transport — produces fewer healthy foragers, raises more compromised brood, and is less able to mount immune responses to pathogens. These stressors compound each other: Varroa-weakened bees are more susceptible to pesticides; pesticide-impaired bees navigate worse and bring back less food; underfed colonies overwinter poorly. Improving colony welfare requires systemic change: reducing pesticide exposure through agricultural policy, mandating diverse forage margins in intensive farming zones, investing in Varroa-resistant genetics, and reconsidering the scale and distance of commercial pollination contracts.
