Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) is a deadly fungal pathogen devastating salamander populations worldwide, threatening some of the most biodiverse amphibian communities on Earth.
Bsal causes significant individual suffering before death. The erosive skin lesions of chytridiomycosis disrupt osmoregulation — animals lose electrolytes through damaged skin and die of cardiovascular collapse in a process that may take days to weeks. Populations infected with Bsal show progressive behavioral abnormalities including lethargy, loss of righting reflex, and cessation of feeding before death. The speed of population collapse in naive European salamander populations was unprecedented — local populations fell from thousands to near zero within seasons. Prevention is the only viable strategy for preserving North American salamanders: preventing Bsal introduction through trade restrictions and biosecurity is exponentially more achievable than managing an established outbreak. The pet trade pathway is the primary risk vector requiring regulation.
