Reintroduction programs impose unavoidable welfare costs on individual animals in service of population-level conservation benefits. Capture involves physical restraint, chemical immobilization, and handling — all acutely stressful. Transport can span thousands of kilometers. Release into unfamiliar territory requires rapid behavioral adjustment in an already stressed animal. These costs are real and should be minimized through best-practice protocols: skilled capture teams, optimal anesthesia regimens, appropriate transport conditions, and soft-release periods that allow acclimatization. Post-release monitoring with GPS enables rapid intervention if animals show signs of poor adaptation or injury. The welfare calculus — stress for individual animals versus population restoration and long-term welfare of recovered populations — generally supports well-conducted reintroductions, but program design should always include explicit welfare assessment frameworks.
