Rapid cooling — moving to shade, applying cool (not cold) water, and immediate emergency veterinary care — dramatically improves survival. The welfare imperative is education: every dog owner should know the signs of heat stroke and the prevention strategies that make it avoidable.

What You Can Do

Never leave dogs in parked cars — not even with windows cracked, not even on mild days
Walk dogs in the early morning or evening during hot weather — avoid midday exercise
Provide continuous access to shade and fresh water for all outdoor dogs
Know the signs of heat stroke: excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, collapse — act immediately if you observe them
If your dog shows heat stroke signs, apply cool (not icy) water, fan them, and rush to a veterinary emergency facility immediately
