Halibut present unique welfare challenges compared to more commonly farmed salmon. Their complex early development, including the metamorphosis during which one eye migrates to produce the characteristic flatfish body plan, is a critical welfare-sensitive period with high potential for malformation and mortality under suboptimal conditions. Adult halibut are highly reactive to disturbance; chronic stress from inappropriate stocking or handling suppresses immune function and growth. The prevalence of cataracts in farmed halibut — thought to be partly nutritional in origin — is a significant welfare concern as impaired vision affects feeding competition and quality of life. Welfare-conscious halibut farming requires careful attention to rearing environment, feed quality, and stocking density at every life stage.
