Modern bear exhibits have improved substantially, but the gap between a wild bear's daily experience and even the best captive environment remains large. Welfare assessment for zoo bears must look beyond space alone to evaluate opportunities for foraging, choice, social or solitary behaviour as appropriate to species, and management of seasonal needs. Poor welfare bears not only suffer individually but undermine public trust in zoos.
