Rainbow trout welfare in aquaculture is better understood than for many farmed fish species, partly because trout have been widely used in research. The evidence confirms that trout experience pain, stress, and social hierarchy effects consistent with sentience. Chronic stocking density stress suppresses immune function and accelerates disease transmission. Handling stress — at grading, vaccination, and harvest — causes acute physiological responses that require recovery time to resolve. Slaughter welfare is a key concern: live chilling, still used in some operations, causes a prolonged dying process that would be considered unacceptable for land animals. Progressive adoption of electrical or percussive pre-stun slaughter significantly improves welfare at the end of life. The economic argument for better welfare is also strong: stressed fish have lower growth rates and higher disease susceptibility.
