Tilapia are one of the world's most widely farmed fish, but intensive production methods raise significant welfare concerns around stocking density, water quality, and handling stress.
Tilapia welfare suffers in multiple ways in intensive production. High stocking densities cause chronic physiological stress, suppressing immune function and increasing disease vulnerability. Aggression under crowding leads to fin erosion and wounds. Low dissolved oxygen — often deliberately tolerated to reduce aeration costs — causes hypoxic stress that fish actively avoid when given a choice. The hormone sex-reversal process itself, while brief, exposes early-stage fry to pharmacological agents. Slaughter welfare is often overlooked in tilapia production, with many fish still alive during gutting in traditional processing. As consumer demand for tilapia grows, there is an urgent need to establish welfare standards for this globally significant species.
