Chinook (king) salmon are the largest Pacific salmon species, farmed at significant welfare cost in sea cages. Their complex needs make them particularly vulnerable to intensive aquaculture conditions.
King salmon welfare in aquaculture is compromised across multiple life stages. Crowding in sea cages causes chronic stress and suppresses immune function, increasing susceptibility to the sea lice infestations that cause lesions, haemorrhage, and tissue damage around the head and gills. The lack of migratory opportunity — a fundamental biological drive — may cause significant frustration and stereotypy. Water quality problems in sea cages, including localised oxygen depletion during feeding, impose additional stress. Premium pricing for king salmon rarely translates into premium welfare standards. As consumer awareness of salmon sentience grows, the gap between the welfare story implied by premium branding and the reality of sea cage conditions becomes increasingly difficult to justify.
