Water scarcity is one of the most acute welfare challenges facing wild African elephants, intensified by drought, borehole competition with livestock, and conflict as elephants seek water near human settlements.
Water stress in wild elephants causes acute and progressive physiological suffering. Dehydration impairs thermoregulation, cognition, lactation, and physical condition. During severe droughts, calves die first — unable to travel the distances necessary to reach remaining water or endure the heat. Adult bulls in musth have elevated water requirements and become more dangerous when water-stressed, increasing conflict risk. Elephants forced into human-settled areas by water scarcity face lethal conflict, snare injuries, and poisoning. The social knowledge loss when water-experienced matriarchs are killed in conflict is a long-term welfare and survival cost for their family groups. Interventions that provide reliable water sources in protected areas during drought are direct welfare improvements for individual animals and reduce deadly human-wildlife conflict.
