Cattle tail docking presents a clear case where a painful procedure is performed for insufficient justification. The procedure causes measurable acute and chronic pain during the docking process. The long-term welfare cost — inability to swish flies effectively — is permanent and daily. Cattle whose tails have been docked show significantly increased fly-avoidance behaviours (leg stomping, skin twitching, head throwing) because their primary defence is absent. The hygiene justification that drove widespread adoption has not been supported by research: milker hygiene can be maintained through cleanliness protocols without subjecting cows to a painful irreversible procedure. The trend toward banning tail docking in progressive jurisdictions reflects the evidence that the welfare costs outweigh any practical benefits.
