Fast-growing broiler chicken breeds, selected for rapid muscle growth, suffer widespread welfare problems including leg disorders, cardiovascular disease, and inability to perform natural behaviors. Reform is possible and gaining traction.
Broiler chicken welfare represents one of the largest-scale animal welfare challenges in existence. The genetic selection for rapid growth creates inherent physiological suffering — bones and cardiovascular systems cannot keep pace with muscle development. Lameness causes chronic pain that alters behavior, reduces feed and water access, and is often untreated. High stocking densities (typically 30-40 kg/m²) prevent expression of natural behaviors including foraging, dust bathing, and social interaction. Litter quality deteriorates rapidly at high densities, causing foot and hock lesions. The transition to slower-growing breeds substantially reduces leg disorder prevalence and improves mobility, with welfare benefits demonstrated across multiple independent studies.
