Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most costly and welfare-significant disease affecting cattle in feedlots. Understanding its causes and prevention enables both better welfare and production outcomes.
BRD causes significant respiratory distress, fever, and pain before it is detected and treated. The reliance on visual observation means many animals suffer for days before clinical signs are obvious enough to trigger treatment. Chronic BRD leaves permanent lung damage reducing oxygen capacity and exercise tolerance. Transport and commingling — unavoidable elements of feedlot production — create the stress cascade that precipitates BRD, making prevention by system redesign extremely difficult. Improved early detection using accelerometer-based monitoring, automated temperature sensing, and milk production data is reducing time-to-treatment in some operations. Adequate pain management using NSAIDs alongside antibiotics improves recovery and welfare outcomes and is supported by evidence.
