Bald eagle welfare threats have shifted from acute persecution to more diffuse anthropogenic causes. Lead poisoning causes progressive neurological damage — weakness, inability to fly, loss of coordination, and ultimately death or permanent disability requiring lifetime care. Eagles suffer for days to weeks before succumbing or being found and treated. Treatment with calcium EDTA chelation is effective if administered early, but many eagles are found too late. Wind turbine strikes cause traumatic injuries including wing fractures, head trauma, and death. Wildlife rehabilitation centers treat hundreds of lead-poisoned bald eagles annually, requiring intensive supportive care. Preventing lead poisoning through hunter education and provision of non-lead alternatives is the highest-impact welfare intervention currently available.
