No current commercial egg production system is welfare-perfect. Battery cages cause chronic frustration through behavioral restriction; enriched cages partially address this but remain highly constrictive. Free-range and barn systems allow behavioral expression but introduce keel bone fractures, feather pecking, and predator risk. The welfare comparison is context-dependent: a well-managed enriched cage may outperform a poorly managed free-range system on some metrics. The clearest welfare improvements lie in management quality — appropriate flock density, enrichment provision, lighting programs, and rapid identification of injured birds — regardless of system type. Consumer pressure and corporate commitments are driving system transitions; oversight of management quality within those systems deserves equal attention.
