Lower urinary tract problems are extremely common in cats and a leading cause of emergency veterinary visits. Understanding the spectrum from stress-related cystitis to obstructive disease enables better prevention and faster response.
FLUTD causes significant discomfort across its spectrum. FIC produces painful bladder inflammation with frequent, urgent, and often unsuccessful attempts to urinate. The stress-disease cycle is particularly insidious — environmental stress triggers cystitis, which itself causes stress, perpetuating the cycle. Urethral obstruction causes extreme distress: the cat strains increasingly desperately as the bladder overfills, then enters collapse from toxemia. Many owners mistake straining for constipation, delaying emergency treatment. Chronic repeat obstructors may require perineal urethrostomy surgery. Prevention through multi-litter-box provision, water intake optimization (wet food), environmental enrichment, and stress reduction addresses the root causes of most feline urinary disease.
