Hip dysplasia is one of the most common and welfare-significant orthopedic conditions in dogs, causing chronic pain and arthritis. Genetic screening, weight management, and multimodal pain control are the cornerstones of welfare.
Hip dysplasia causes chronic, progressive pain that profoundly affects quality of life. Dogs with moderate to severe dysplasia experience pain with every step and may be reluctant to rise, play, or climb stairs. The progressive nature means welfare can deteriorate over months to years. Early intervention — particularly JPS in very young puppies or TPO in juvenile dogs — can prevent arthritis development; these windows close rapidly. In adult dogs with established arthritis, multimodal management (NSAIDs, physiotherapy, environmental modification, weight control) achieves meaningful comfort improvements. Total hip replacement is highly effective but expensive. Genetic screening of breeding stock remains the most powerful tool for reducing disease prevalence across generations.
