Dismissing phobic behaviour as "dramatic" or "attention-seeking" delays appropriate treatment and prolongs suffering. Veterinary guidance is essential — the combination of pre-event medication and behaviour modification is significantly more effective than either approach alone, and the welfare improvement for treated dogs is substantial.

What You Can Do

Consult a vet or veterinary behaviourist if your dog shows any signs of noise anxiety — early treatment prevents worsening
Create a safe refuge space for your dog — a covered crate or den in an interior room where they feel secure
Ask your vet about fast-acting anxiolytics (alprazolam, sileo) to be given before predicted noise events
Use systematic desensitisation protocols between noise events — recordings at low volume, gradually increasing, combined with counter-conditioning
Never punish anxious behaviour — reassurance is appropriate; punishment significantly worsens anxiety
Campaign for restrictions on recreational fireworks — significant public support exists for limiting their use to organised events
