Common carp are among the most widely farmed fish in the world, yet their welfare in aquaculture is largely overlooked — evidence of pain sensitivity makes their welfare morally significant.
Carp welfare exists at the intersection of fish sentience science and the practical reality of a species farmed at enormous scale in systems that receive little regulatory attention. The evidence that carp are capable of nociception and have negative experiences when injured or stressed is sufficient to warrant precautionary welfare measures. Yet carp are frequently transported to live fish markets in crowded, low-oxygen conditions and slaughtered by methods — live chilling, cutting while conscious — that are clearly aversive if the animals feel pain. Improving carp welfare at slaughter is the highest-impact available intervention, followed by stocking density limits and water quality management.
