Diabetes mellitus in dogs is a manageable chronic condition — with appropriate insulin therapy and dietary management, affected dogs can live comfortable and fulfilling lives.
Uncontrolled diabetes causes genuine suffering — the chronic thirst, frequent urination, and progressive muscle wasting of undiagnosed or poorly controlled DM significantly impair quality of life. Diabetic ketoacidosis, when it occurs, causes extreme nausea, weakness, and rapid deterioration that is clearly distressing. By contrast, well-controlled diabetic dogs are comfortable, engaged, and able to enjoy all their normal activities. The welfare challenge for owners is the commitment required: twice-daily injections, consistent feeding times, and regular monitoring are demanding. Veterinary support and owner education significantly improve compliance and therefore dog welfare outcomes.
