Small backyard and small-scale commercial flocks often have better welfare than industrial operations, but still face challenges including predation risk, parasites, nutritional deficiencies, and inadequate veterinary attention.
Small flock hens often have significantly better lives than their industrial counterparts — access to outdoor space, varied terrain, and lower densities allow expression of natural behaviours. However, welfare challenges specific to small systems persist. Owners may lack experience recognising illness, meaning conditions like egg binding, respiratory disease, or mite infestations are detected late. Predation events cause significant suffering both to killed birds and to survivors who witness attacks and experience disrupted flock dynamics. Nutritional management in backyard systems is often informal, with hens supplemented with inappropriate scraps rather than balanced feed. Despite genuine welfare advantages over battery cages, small flock systems are not automatically high-welfare without active management.
